The Preston Society Bird Watching & Natural History

Field Trips 2012

Venue: Marton Mere

Date: Saturday 7th January 2012 10.00

Weather: Overcast, Cool, Breezy

Park: Lawson Road

Leader: Various

Party Number: 22

The party set off from Lawson Road to a RSPB temporary stand where some Telescopes had been set up to view
the Long Eared Owls. It was a new location and there were only 3 to see. We only viewed one but were
difficult to see if your eyes were not trained.
We eventually continued to the main Mere and concentrated on the Caravan Park side.
We had Lunch in the Fylde Bird Club Hide before continuing onto other hides and the Feeding Station where
Birds could be seen at close quarters.
Some of the party decided to visit Lytham Crematorium on the Return Journey to look for the Ring Necked Parakeets.
After seeing a lot of Lytham, we eventually asked a local who guided us to the site. After 5 minutes of waiting, five
Birds suddenly flew into a tree and were very noisy but the sound was unmistakable.
We carried onto try and locate the site of the Tundra Bean Geese near Blackpool Airport but the map we had
wasn’t up to date and the light was failing so we decided to call it a day.
Another successful outing and after previous years at that site, was milder and warmer.
